A Game of Hearts - Book Review

A Game of Hearts - Book Review

A Game of Hearts by Joanna Barker is the first book I've read by this author. This historical enemies to lovers romance is set in the Regency era and features snappy wit between likable characters. If you enjoyed Sense and Suitability by Pepper Basham and The Elusive Miss Ellison by Carolyn Miller, then you will love A Game of Hearts.

Plot Summary

Marigold Cartwell and Tristian Gates have been enemies since childhood and their rivalry is seen clearest on the archery field. After loosing to Tristian in a match, Marigold looses her patience with the mens-only archery society and starts her own with one rule: women can join. In order to prove herself Marigold takes a dare from a crafty baron that, if she looses, will cause her to shut down her society.

When Tristian and Marigold caught in a compromising situation, the only way to save her reputation is for them to get married. They begrudgingly become engaged and each dreads their upcoming wedding. But in an effort to make their marriage tolerable, they take the time to get to know one another and begin to see each other in a new light. Is it possible for them to move from tolerance to love, and can Marigold save her archery society despite the man who wants to see her fail?

Personal Thoughts

This one of the most well-executed enemies to lovers stories I've ever read. Marigold and Tristian's progression from enemies to friends to lovers was believable. Both were hard-headed, stubborn, and more than a little snarky, which is probably why they ended up being such a great couple.

The baron was horrible and I disliked him instantly. I wondered how Tristian and Marigold would outwit him. The little side plot with Oliver (Marigold's brother) and Sylvia was interesting. I'm intrigued to see how Barker does Oliver's story in the next book.
