If you're looking for a romcom with a subtly deep message, consider adding Brighter Than Before by Courtney Walsh to your TBR. This clean romance features a spunky heroine who finds herself in situations she never dreamed she'd be in. If you enjoyed Everything's Coming Up Rosie by Walsh or Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham, you'll love Brighter Than Before.
Plot Summary
A year after her husband’s affair and their subsequent divorce, Claire is still spiraling downwards. Tired of being angry and living in the past, she decides to create a new life for herself. With the support of her adult daughter, Minnie, she moves to Chicago and as part of her new beginning she decides to try things that scare her.
When Minnie sets up a dating profile for her, Claire dives back into the dating game. Her new friend, Miles, and Minnie collaborate together and set her up with the most promising guys. Each date fails spectacularly and with each flop, Miles is there to comfort, encourage, and uplift her. Claire would go out with him except ... he's sworn off all committed relationships. Could a second chance be on the horizon for both of them?
Personal Thoughts
This may be one of my favorite books by Walsh. I love Claire's plucky nature and how she was determined to create a new life for herself. At first I wondered what was up with Miles and why he was so against relationships. Of course, it made sense in the end, but for awhile I didn't know if he was actually a flirt or not. As for her ex-husband John ... the less said about him, the better.
Poor Claire had the worst luck with dates. I laughed and shook my head at the same time over some of the guys she went out with. It was exciting to watch Claire check items off her list and put down roots in her new home.
