If All Else Sails - Book Review

If All Else Sails - Book Review

I have a hard time finding rom-coms that actually make me laugh, but If All Else Sails by Emma St. Clair is one of those rare finds. This is the first book I've read by this author and I could not stop laughing. If you liked How to Plot a Payback by Melissa Ferguson or Some Like It Scot by Pepper Basham, then you will enjoy If All Else Sails.

Plot Summary

Wyatt may be a hot, famous hockey player, but in Josie's mind he's a jerk jock who hates her. So when her brother, who's also Wyatt's agent, incentivizes her to help Wyatt after an injury, she begrudgingly agrees to be his nurse for a month. After all, she can survive his comments for a month, right?

Wyatt's had a crush on Josie ever since he met her, but his foot-in-mouth disease has made it hard to get close to her. As part of her nursing duties, she accompanies him on a sailing trip that's significant to him and he sees this as his chance to win her heart. As they sail along the coastline to Georgia, can they untangle all the feelings and attraction that's simmering below the surface?

Personal Thoughts

Josie is one of the funniest characters I've ever met. She's snarky, extroverted, and full of sass. I never knew what was going to come out of her mouth next, but I knew it would be funny. Her spunk made the story shine. Also, I LOVED all the doggie outfits for Jib 😂

The more she's around Wyatt, the more she realizes how much she misunderstood him for years. She has some anxiety issues, partially due to her brother almost dying at age twelve from a mosquito bite. She also had an incident that made her shy away from athletes, which creates an obstacle with her relationship with Wyatt.

Speaking of Wyatt ... poor guy; I felt so bad for him. He's introverted, uncommunicative, and grouchy; he cares for Josie, but everything he says to her comes out as an insult, including his monosyllable responses. He has a horrible foot-in-mouth disease, but underneath all those prickles is a big softie. I loved how Josie brought that out of him (well, her and Jib). He also has some family difficulties centered around his father, brother, and the passing of his uncle.

The chemistry between Josie and Wyatt sizzled! While there was no spice, things heated up between them. Also, their banter was incredible. Josie's wit paired with Wyatt's deadpan had me in stitches. For a long time Josie fought her attraction to Wyatt, but when her walls fall it's spectacular.

A note about the writing style: I love stories told in the first person and I love dual POV. St. Clair combined both of these and it made the story come alive! I understood where the characters were coming from and I felt like I was inside their heads.

Notes

This book is best for teens and adults.
