In Good Company - Book Review

In Good Company - Book Review

Several weeks ago I did a post on After a Fashion by Jen Turano, the first in one of her historical romance trilogies. Since then, I have finished the series! The second book, In Good Company, is an enemies to lovers romance with a mystery subplot. If you enjoyed After a Fashion or A Game of Hearts by Joanna Barker, you will love In Good Company.

Plot Summary

On the same day Millie Longfellow's latest nannying job ends in disaster and Everett Mulberry's nanny for his wards quits, the employment agency recommends each to the other, informing them that this is their last chance. While Millie's unorthodox ways are more endearing to children than adults, she's ready to mother her new charges and convince Everett that his wards are in need of his love and care. Unfortunately, Everett is more concerned with preparing for his expected marriage to a rich socialite than the children entrusted to him by his dead friend.

Through Millie's insistence Everett disengages himself from his work and sees his wards for the treasures they are. But his almost fiancé is displeased with the amount of attention he gives the new nanny and demands a proposal sooner rather than later. But Everett is unsure he still wants the girl people of his station think he should marry more than the lower class woman who has wormed his way into his heart. And when new evidence brings to light the suspicious circumstances surrounding the death of his wards' parents, he will need all of Millie's unusual methods and imaginations to solve the mystery at hand.

Personal Thoughts

Everett and Millie's relationship were foreshadowed in After a Fashion, so I was excited to see how Turano would bring them together. It was more spectacular than I bargained for. The humorous situations grew better and better as the story progressed. Despite their devious natures, I loved the children. While Everett was an arrogant know-it-all at first, he changed and I grew to like him. Millie's extensive vocabulary and misuse of words always made me laugh. And I couldn't stand Caroline Dixon; she was horrendous.

While the mystery aspect was light, it was entertaining. Millie and Everett's relaitonship with each other and the children took center stage, but there was also a decent amount of suspense and intrigue. I was thrilled that Lucetta and Abigail from the previous book made frequent appearances. And the hints about Lucetta's story made me want the next book.
