Not What We Pictured - Book Review

Not What We Pictured by Becca Kinzer contains all the elements that makes me love this author. The quirky characters, borderline ridiculous plot, and extensive banter collaborate to create a fun, lighthearted story that will make anyone laugh. If you enjoyed First Love, Second Draft by Kinzer or After a Fashion by Jen Turano, you will love Not What We Pictured

Plot Summary

McKenna is desperate for her baby sister to get engaged so she can move on with her life, but every proposal attempt bombs. The latest proposal attempt ends with her accidentally kissing a complete stranger and both he and her sister's boyfriend ending up in the hospital. When she surfaces from the disaster, she realizes in horror that the stranger ended up with the engagement ring, she drops everything and races to his tiny hometown in Tennessee to retrieve it.
After surviving the crazy kisser in Nebraska, Nate hoped for peace and quite while he helped with his mom's B&B before he began his new job in New York. But he arrives with no luggage because the airport misplaced it and finds his mom struggling to keep the B&B going. When McKenna shows up demanding the ring (which is still in his lost luggage), she rents a room and decides to stick around instead of leaving like he would like her to. But as they make repairs around the B&B and prepare for a celebrity fundraising concert, what started out as an accidental meeting flourishes into an once-in-a-lifetime romance.

Personal Thoughts

The best way to describe the entire plot is barely controlled chaos. Only Kinzer can pull off something so delightfully ridiculous and quirky. McKenna and Nate were night and day in many respects, but in the most important ways they had much in common. The other cast of characters were entertaining and kept me laughing. As usual, Kinzer's banter was spot on. Some serious moments allow a slight break from the crazy, which only made the havoc more memorable. I'm also so glad there was no third-act breakup. In short, Kinzer did it again 😁
