Playing the Part - Book Review

Playing the Part - Book Review

Playing the Part by Jen Turano is the last book in this trilogy. Those who have read the previous two books have seen Lucetta support her friends' relationships, but not it's time for her own romance. If you have enjoyed the rest of the series, you will love Playing the Part.

Plot Summary

When her stepfather offers her to Silas Ruff, an unwanted suitor, as payment for his gambling debt, actress Lucetta Plum has no choice but to go into hiding. Her wealthy friend Abigail Hart suggests her grandson's estate as a refuge, but upon their arrival, Lucetta finds that her unwitting host is slightly less unusual than the estate he runs and one of her many admirers that she loathes. The only thing keeping her from leaving is the threat of Silas and his dogged determination to posess her.

Bram Haverstein fell in love with his idea of Lucetta Plum when he first saw her on stage. After picturing her demure, fragile, and melancholic, Lucetta's arrival shocks him as much as the truth: she is none of those things. In fact, she is capable, independent, and at times unsophisticated. But he finds the woman behind the parts she plays is better than he could imagine. But if he wishes to convince her of this, he must reveal his secrets and show he is not like her other admirers before Silas takes her from him forever.

Personal Thoughts

Bram and Lucetta are one of the most quirky, creative couples in literary history. Bram's quirks may be more obvious, but Lucetta is unusual in her own way. But their idiosyncrasies are what made them adorable. As usual, there was so many ridiculous circumstances that made me laugh and I loved nearly all of the characters.

After Silas disappeared in After a Fashion, I hadn't expected for him to pop up again, but he reappeared in all his smarmy glory. It was satisfying to see him get his due in the end. Lucetta's stepfather was repulsive, but he had a redeeming moment. Turano wrapped up the novel and the couples in a satisfactory way, though the ending had a twist I didn't expect.
