Those who have read Pepper Basham most likely know her for her contemporary and historical romances. However, she has branched off into another genre: YA romance. Enter The Cinderella Plot, a clean YA romance novel that both adults and teens can enjoy. Even if you typically don't read YA, consider adding this one to your TBR.
Plot Summary
Paisley Harper's oversized cardigans, love of books, and unusual socks makes her disappear among the cool kids at Ransom High School. When one of the football players chooses a popular over her to take to homecoming, it sets Paisley over the edge and pushes her to follow the advice in The Cinderella Plot, a new self-help book about transforming girls from being unnoticed to the stars of the show. Unfortunately, Paisley's best friend and fellow nerd Chris is skeptical against her transformation and the more she changes, the more distant he becomes.
Is The Cinderella Plot the key to Paisley finding her identity? Can she find herself without loosing her best friend? And is said best friend wanting to become even closer to her, like ... her boyfriend?
Personal Thoughts
I loved both Chris and Paisley. Paisley's was adorable and quirky and her bookish nature made me want to befriend her. I wanted to hug her so many times. When I read the synopsis of the book, I was concerned that she would be doing something cringy nonstop until the very end of the book. Fortunately, she quickly realized that The Cinderella Plot was not producing a good transformation and turned to the Bible instead. Chris was lovable as well - mostly because he could make her favorite coffee. 😉 The ending was perfect; the way Basham wrapped in Cinderella was amazing.
The plot thread with Cam and his nefarious schemes stressed me out. I didn't like him from the beginning, but I disliked him even more after I found out what he was doing. Paisley's strategy to expose him was brilliant and I cheered her on. It was satisfying when she was able to save her family's bookstore.
