The Heart of the Mountains - Book Review

The Heart of the Mountains - Book Review

Last week I began reviewing Pepper Basham's My Heart is in the Blue Ridge series. The Heart of the Mountains is the second in the series and takes place two years after the first. If you enjoyed Laurel's Dream or any of Basham's other books, you will love The Heart of the Mountains.

Plot Summary

Cora Taylor follows her brother to the Appalachian mountains to work alongside him after spending time as a nurse at the front. Her first day ends with Jeb McAdams saving her off the cliff and her new life only becomes more dangerous from there. But she finds purpose in using her skills to bring healing and help anyone who comes to her.

Jeb McAdam's isn't prepared for a feisty flatlander to upend his life and turn his peaceable world into a whirlwind of activity. His life is further complicated when several women and children in trouble take shelter under his roof, Cora temporarily living with him so she can tend them, and the rumor mill suggests that he and Cora are living in sin. As the threats become more serious, Cora and Jeb will have to find a way to put an end to it before anyone is harmed.

Personal Thoughts

Gracious, this book was adorable! Cora was tough, but sensitive and you never knew what version of her you would get. Jeb was steady, reliable, and more than capable of handling anything thrown at him. I loved seeing Jonathan and Laurel again and getting an update on their lives.

Again, the story gave a look at life in Appalachia. The suspense in this one was a bit higher than in Laurel's Dream, but all ends happily. We get a few more details about Kizzie, but are left with more questions than answers. One of the most exciting parts was seeing Sam resolve his personal issues.
