I'm a sucker for friends-to-lovers tropes. In fact, it's my favorite trope (with fake-dating being a close second). Part of the reason why I love The Perfect Rom-Com by Melissa Ferguson is that the couple are friends-to-lovers! If you liked Ferguson's Meet Me in the Margins and Love in Tandem by Becca Kinzer, then you'll love The Perfect Rom-Com.
Plot Summary
Bryony Page attends her first writers conference with high hopes that she can sell her story and thus help support her grandmother's organization, where she teaches ESL. Literary agent Jack Sterling shatters this dream when he pronounces her manuscript unfit for publication. However, he sees potential in her and offers her a job as a ghostwriter for Amelia Benedict, the popular rom-com novelist. Bryony agrees on one condition: Jack must represent her novel and get it sold to a publishing house.
Two years later, Bryony's stories skyrocket Amelia's fame and her stories are beloved by millions of rabid fans. But their secret threatens to come to life when Amelia can't get her answers right on interviews. Because of this Bryony finds herself on a book tour with Jack and Amelia so she can feed Amelia the correct answers.
Not only does this trip test her patience with Amelia, but Bryony finds herself questioning her long-held assumptions about her relationship with Jack. Are they really just friends ... or is there something more between them?
Personal Thoughts
I loved Bryony; she is, as Jack says, sprightly, and when she's riled up she's adorable. When she was irritated (and that was often, given she had to deal with Amelia) she would start using big words and get melodramatic, which cracked me up.
Jack was a man used to talking his way in or out of anything, but he met his match in Bryony. She saw through his smooth-talking and called him out on it multiple times. But he wasn't a bad guy. I adored his snarky sense of humor and all the ways he shielded Bryony from Amelia.
Together, Bryony and Jack had incredible chemistry. I loved all the understated ways that showed how well they knew each other; the author did a perfect job with this. All of Bryony's memories with Jack showed how intertwined their lives were; everyone knew they were supposed to be together ... except her.
While the romance was center stage, other things were happening. Namely Amelia. Wow. This woman was a piece of work. Even though all she did was slap her name on the cover and be famous, she had the audacity to think she was the only irreplaceable member of the publishing team. However, enduring her arrogance was worth it in the end. What happened to her in the climax was priceless.
Notes
This book is best for teenager and adults.
