Love Unmasked - Book Review

Love Unmasked - Book Review

Becky Dean, author of Love & Other Great Expectations, has become one of my favorite authors recently and all summer I've been impatiently waiting for her newest book, Love Unmasked, to release. I just finished reading it and I'm excited to share this YA contemporary romance today!

Plot Summary

Evie Whitmore has an ulterior motive for going on her art and architecture class trip to Venice. In the heart of the city is a fan club for her favorite book series, Elven Realms, and she's laid out plans to sneak out at night to attend. The first night she sneaks out in full costume, she runs into a masked stranger named Angelo who's also attending the club. They agree to keep their identities hidden until the last day of the trip; until then they'll enjoy the club and the easy relationship their anonymity allows.

By day Evie's a dutiful popular student who's teamed up with her introverted yet intriguing classmate Gabriel Martinez. By night she's a fan-girl immersed in her fantasy world with a mysterious boy who understands her more than anyone else she knows. Who is really behind Angelo's mask, and more importantly, who does she want it to be?

Content Warnings

None.

Personal Thoughts

This book was so much fun! Gabriel and Evie are a severe case of opposites attract, but they fit so well together. Becky Dean's signature banter was there, though it took a little longer than in previous books for it to appear. Also, I loved that the book took place in Venice.

Evie and Gabriel both grew during the course of the story. I can relate to Evie's people-pleasing tendencies and I liked how Gabriel helped her see she didn't need to let people walk over her. Meanwhile he learned that not all people are bad and some of them are legitimately nice. This one's definitely a re-read for me!

Notes

This book is best for teens and adults.
